I walked from Paris in 2004.
It was very flat, a lot of walking roads, very few pilgrim shelters so more expensive than walking in Spain.

Last year I started in Lourdes and crossed into Spain at at the Somport pass. The Camino Aragones is a beautiful route that joins the Camino Frances at Puente La Reina.

Two elderly gentlemen (one Swiss, one Canadian) are seeking companions to walk the Camino del Cid with them – Burgos to Elche – approx 1700 km in Spain . Both are very experienced pilgrims.
Tom (Canadian) has been to Santiago 7 times, and walked almost every Camino route you can think of, amassing about 10,000 km in the process. They plan to walk together out of Burgos on Sept 23rd and take about 60 days to complete the walk.
Please contact Tom Chatham in Victoria , BC , Canada at 250-598-5657 or email chatshima@shaw.ca to make arrangements to meet for all or a part of this walk. www.caminodelcid.org /

I walk on the Camino this year with a charming German woman who started in Le Puys and said it was different than Spain in that it almost all private gites. The accomadation were as a rule nicer but more expensive. Evening meal was also available and was a good buy.The scenery was varied and good . You could also call ahead for reservation each night as the gite owner knew the numbers of the next days gites.I plan to walk this myself in the late spring. Once you get the bug its always necessary to have another walk in the wings-

Its good to see some familiar names on this site. I have not contributed for a few years now following my camino's of 2003 and 2005 from SJPP and Burgos. So hello again to all those old (and new) friends.
The posts are very much the same as they were then with busy refugios and taxi pilgrims. I looked back at some posts in the past. On the one hand I remember noticing my irritations at turning up tired and dusty at refugios to find freshly showered 'pilgrims' who I know were still in bed when I left the last refuge. I had no desire to take part in a bed race, but was fortunate in always finding a space. This was mainly because I was able to walk, both times, in March/April.
I guess it may even be busy now at those times. I suppose an answer might be for the refugios to put a time stamp on the pilgrim passport on leaving and anyone arriving 'too early' at the next refuge would have to wait. As with everything this could get complex. On the other hand, I noticed from an early post that at that time I was more forgiving....its a lesson of the camino, about learning tolerance, trying to look at your own irritations and learn about yourself, and to pick up a comment on this thread, in buddhist terms, practicing compassion and accepting those taxi pilgrims just want to be happy too. Ok, ok,ok, all very spiritual (and not unique to buddhists I know!) but not very easy after 6 hours+ walking. I learned that there is no one 'camino' that we walk, everyone has their own, so a camino with a bed every night will be a different experience to one where this is not always possible. What we have to deal with is our irritations about the 'cheats'. Maybe I should go back and do a July Camino, now that would be a real test.

Hi Al,
I think starting before Roncesvalles is a great idea if you have the time. (Personally I love the walk from SJPP into the foothills of the Pyrenees to Roncesvalles and I understand some of the spots from deeper in France are very beautiful as well.) Are you aware of the following website: http://www.csj.org.uk/ ?
The Confraternity of St. James has done a lot of work outlining various routes and keeping updated thanks to some dedicated people. If you go there and click on Routes to Santiago and then Map of the Routes it will give you a good sense of common ways people have travelled over the years.
Then if you back up and click on Individual Routes you will find some really good overviews of each route.

Once you start to get a sense of where you want to go you can come back here and/or click on the discussion forum from the cjs site. In the latter case the individual routes have separate sections where there is lots of info available and you can ask any specific questions you wish to. It seems there is always someone who has a good answer to almost any question on all of the sites.
Buen camino!

Just back there. Arrived in santiago on 24th having stayed in monto gozo the day before. The last 180 km was not really camino somtimes, struggle to get a place to stay was not always sucessful for everyone. Some people got sick with vomitting. The nights in the last 5 days were cold and the path was congested with pilgrims. We walked long distances and in the evenings it was more peacful.

My overall thought on this.. do not walk in a holy year unless you allow yourself to be totally at the wimm of what ever will happen. This works more or less.
A bit from up to San dominigo mostly.

Hi Paul and everyone,
I'm surprised at the number of pilgrims who are still pouring into Santiago de Compostela - 1649 today alone. I would have thought that anyone who walked in July would have wanted to be in SdeC for the 25th - but apparently not.For anyone who hasn't seen these numbers, these stats are from http://peregrinossantiago.es
"During the month of july 2010, 40.690 pilgrims were received at the Pilgrim's Office. The number of pilgrims in the past Holy Year, 2004, during the same period was 31.896. Of those pilgrims, 18.995 (46,68%) were women and 21.695 (53,32%) men. 36.054 (88,61%) pilgrims arrived on foot, 4.424 (10,87%) by bicicle, 203 (0,50%) on horseback, and 9 (0,02%) pilgrims on wheel-chair."

"Starting Points:
Most of the pilgrims received in this period started their Way to Santiago in: Sarria: 9.948 (24,45%); Cebreiro: 3.135 (7,70%); Tui: 2.950 (7,25%); S. Jean P. Port: 2.457 (6,04%); Ponferrada: 2.195 (5,39%); Roncesvalles: 1.751 (4,30%); León: 1.658 (4,07%); Astorga: 1.483 (3,64%); etc.

The Chosen Routes:
Most of the pilgrims chose Frances-Camino de: 28.188 (69,28%); Portugues-Camino: 5.072 (12,46%); Norte-Camino de: 3.124 (7,68%); Via de la Plata: 2.040 (5,01%); Primitivo-Camino: 1.086 (2,67%); etc."

Having walked twice, I’m as familiar as others with this issue. I don’t have an answer, only my perspective. For me, the Camino is about following the road, seeing where it leads each day. This statement speaks to the physical journey but as pilgrims know, it’s also a description of the emotional and spiritual experience.

I have been without a refugio bed on occasion, but always found a place to sleep and with it had unique and positive experiences. I found this in a semi-private camas above a bar in Atapuerca, an inexpensive hotel in Burgos, a small inn overlooking the river in Porto Marin and a private home in Sarria. Such is the Camino for me. The gifts of The Way are many, and some come in an unusual manner. My task is to accept my circumstances, and see the beauty of how God works if I trust in his way. The walk parallels life - I can’t change the habits or failings of others. I can only focus on my attitude.

I’m a Catholic, and I don’t believe non-Catholics should be restricted from Catholic-run refugios. I know that wasn't the suggestion, and for me it would be ‘anti-Camino' to restricted anyone for any similar reason. We will never know when or how someone’s heart might be transformed by sitting among real pilgrims who describe the experience of walking hundreds of kilometers. To me we should welcome all as much as possible. A tour bus arriving at a refugio or other obvious non-pilgrims should be told the beds are not intended for them; rules about who can use a refugio might be posted on the entranceways. Otherwise, the Camino is to me a truly open and accepting society, an ideal of how things can be. The attitude of this forum is an extension of that and I believe visitors here get that message...

In my Camino workshops I advise would-be walkers to expect this situation, and prepare to be without a refugio bed on occasion. My recommendation is not to get up early, and not to race to the next town, but simply to walk as one feels comfortable, and accept the situation upon arrival. I suggest a refugio bed is usually available, but an alternate may be required sometimes. I recommend a sleeping mat for busy times, such as summer and Holy Years. I also advise my workshop participants to stay in smaller towns that are less common as Camino stops. I followed this approach in 2009 and to me it seemed as though there were fewer walkers last year than there were in 2003, even though the annual population had in reality doubled.

Just my thoughts…

Buen Camino to all.

The positives far outwayed a small negative. I enjoyed my camino immensely. As I am sure you are only to aware meeting other pilgrims and sharing in the fellowship of the journey is the Camino was what made it for me.

Hi there,

Just finished recently and I have to tell you it did bother me from time to time about not having accommodation knowing that others had not walked the Way.

On several occasions I arrived at hostels and seen people who I knew for sure had not even finished dressing as I was leaving the hostel in the morning. There was no way they could have passed me without me seeing them and yet they some how got there before me. I could understand if on the day someone was not feeling well or may have an injury, but not everyday.

The whole point of doing the Camino is for the experience of walking and "suffering" in order to earn the Compestella justly and with integrity. Never mind, I enjoyed my Camino and will go again, please God!!!

Adios amigo

i just returned from the Camino after a good walk from St jean to Finisterre. about 900 K with diversions, and It was not as crowded as i expected . True alot of the municipal albergues were "completo" but i was never unable to find a bed and never slept on the floor. I will say that I think that Germany must be empty this summer.
The only concern that i ran into was -BED BUGS- i have walked five times before and never gave it a thought. But in the municipal albergue in ST Jean i got bed bugs and didn't know what they were.i had two dozen itchy bites that stayed from 10 days.on the advive of the hospitilaro i layed all my gear out on a black plastic in the hot sun for a couple hours and that seemed to work .But then again in in santa Irene just before Santiago i got a few more, what a pain .After that I really upscaled my sleeping places to Casa rurals or nice private albergures(clean sheets)and no riffraf.
I did the long walk out to finisterre and really enjoyed the town and the sea. i went in the water and enjoyed the sun. The town is very light hearted and fun, in contrast to Santiago which was less than before.I did find an excellent place to stay. On that little street between the two big streets near the credential office is a hostal called RAMOS , clean reasonably and close -R/raina # 18-3 981-581-859 .Also would like to say that in Neigeria the first day out of Santiago the "albergue turistico de Lagrosa" really friendly with shade trees and hammocks 981 885 820.
this was my best walk yet , great bunch of Germans who stole my heart and lightend my load . thanks Darrell

Hi again,
The train (renfe.es) goes from Logrono to Madrid leaving at 7:52am and arriving just after 11:00 and there are lots of buses that start at 6:45 and seem to leave every couple of hours or less. (Go to the alsa.es site). I've never found it necessary to book ahead but things could possibly be different this year.
Buen camino

Thank you,

When I traveled in 2004 I had to take a bus from Madrid to Pamplona and then another from Pamplona to Roncesvalles. Last time I walked however, I did not stop in Logrono. Does anyone know if it will be easy enough to find a bus from Logrono to Madrid? (I do remember that the Albergue in Logrona had a really nice fountain to soak your feet in though...)

Thanks!

HI David,
I second the congrats on your second completion of the Via de la Plata. Will you be speaking about it the next Victoria meeting? I'm just across from you on the mainland and would love to hear about your trip in more detail sometime. Your perspective would be particularly interesting after this second visit. Have you met others who have done the same?

Hi Paul,
I agree with Barbara. I think you'll get a better sense what you should do as you go along. In the meantime, the section you're in right now is so beautiful it's a shame to miss it. Of course I do feel that way about most of it.
Enjoy - and pleased drop a note to the forum when you have the opportunity and inclination. I'm living the camino vicariously this year and I imagine many others are as well.
Buen camino
